Campsite Cévennes The Gard Holidays in the Cévennes

HOLIDAYS IN
the Cévennes

Bordering the Gardon River in Saint Jean du Gard, campsite Mas de la Cam in the Gard is in the immediate vicinity of the Cévennes National Park, which is on UNESCO’s World heritage list because of the exceptional natural beauty of the Grand Causses limestone plateaux and the Cevennes mountains, as well as for the work over the centuries of the shepherds, who have contributed to shaping the landscape.

From our campsite as a starting point you can discover a great variety of landscapes, which stretches out over several departments: the Lozère, Gard, Hérault and Aveyron. There are four distinct geographical zones which make the Cevennes such a special area: the numerous valleys, where sparkling streams find their way and attract plenty of sun-adoring bathers in summertime on the south side; the Aigoual mountain, with, at it’s summit of 1,567m a meteorology station; the Méjean Causse bordered by the Gorges du Tarn and Gorges de la Jonte, and on the north side the Mont-Lozère.

what to do in the cévennes ?

The Cevennes are a paradise for cyclists; there are many small roads into the mountains or in the valleys where cars are scarce but where the scenery is breath-taking. Passionate cyclists ourselves, we have established over 160 cycling trips, with a total length of over 12 000km. The descriptions of these cycling trips can be downloaded from the Internet.

GR70, or the Stevenson footpath, winds through a good part of the Cevennes. This particular path is 274km long and leads from Le-Puy-en-Velay up to St-Jean-du-Gard, in the footsteps of R.L. Stevenson and his donkey Modestine. To walk the entire path will take you about 10 to 12 days, and you can complete this beautiful experience with a visit to the entirely renovated Musée de Vallées Cévenoles, now established in an ancient silk spinning mill in the heart of St-Jean-du-Gard.

“Canyoning” or water-hiking in the Gorges du Soucy at only 7kmfor the campsite, or, for the more enduring, in the Gorges de Tapoul, is just one of the many possible ways to enjoy the rivers and streams in the Cevennes. There are several groups of certified guides who organize these various activities that will allow you to enjoy the cool water in the summer.
To go canoeing or kayaking during your stay in the Cevennen is also a good idea: for example in the Gorges de l’Hérault, Gorges du Tarn or in the Gorges du Gardon nearby the Pont du Gard.

The Corniche des Cévennes is a road trip that will allow you to enjoy the beautiful sceneries of the Cevennes, on the road from St-Jean-du-Gard up to Florac. And once you’re there you can either go canoeing for the day in the Gorges du Tarn, or drive on to the Mont Aigoual!
