THINGS TO DO IN ALÈS

Known as the capital of the Cévennes, Alès is the second biggest town in the Gard area with 40,000 residents. Once Gaulle, once Roman, once a major Protestant site, then a mining town, Alès has served as a backdrop for many of the major episodes of the history of France. Just wander around the village and you will immediately see the traces left by time. The Protestant temple contrasts with the Saint-Jean-Baptiste d’Alès cathedral and the town’s churches: Tamaris and Saint-Julien-des-Causses. Walk past the Tempéras arena and the Vauban fort, then climb to the top of the Ermitage hill for a superb view over the Cévennes.

Visit the former mining site and travel back in time to the 19th and 20th centuries when Alès was a coal mining town. Don’t forget to visit the archaeology museum, musée du Colombier, and the modern art museum and library named Pierre-André-Benoit.

Alès is very dynamic in terms of culture and sports. The city has a free Midi agency and a car complex (Alès-Cévennes mechanical center), a stadium (Pierre-Pibarot stadium), an ice rink, an equestrian center, a leisure park (Parc de la Tour Vieille), a rollerblading room and a nautical center where you can book a boat rental with your family. Several festivals are organized every year, including the famous Alès Feria and the Meuh Folle Festival.

Around the city, you will find several remarkable buildings (Rousson castle, Portes castle, Bécamel tower of Salindres, Cheylard d’Aujac) as well as exceptional natural sites such as the Trabuc cave (Mialet) and the Prafrance bamboo plantation ( Générargues).
